Requesting a Letter of Recommendation
Writing letters of recommendation is an important part of my job, and I genuinely enjoy bragging about my students. If you are thinking about requesting a letter from me, please consider the following:
If you think I am the best person to ask for a letter of recommendation, please email me, stop by my office hours, or schedule an appointment to request a letter. Ideally, requests should be made at least a month in advance.

- What grade(s) did you receive in my class(es)?
- Have I worked with you on a research project?
- Have you developed a professional connection with me (even if your grades aren't great)?

- What are you applying for?
- Give me a brief description of what you are applying for. Please include a link to the website if you have one.
- Please attach a copy of your application materials.
- If possible, please submit a copy (even an early rough draft or outline) of each of the materials required in your application - perhaps a personal statement, cover letter, essay, etc. This helps me stick to your narrative and gives me additional information so that I can make strong case for you.

- List of all classes we took together, and the semester
- What accomplishments can you recall from my class? Is there anything from my class your particularly proud of and want me to highlight? (and don't be modest!)
- If you have a copy of a completed paper or assignment you're proud of, please send it so I can discuss it in detail.
- Anything else I should know? Please provide any additional relevant information that you're comfortable sharing - whether it's about you, your classes, the program/award, your life story, etc.
- When is the deadline for this letter?
- How do I submit this letter for you?
- Please provide all submission instructions, including any links or email addresses.
